In the wake of time when trauma,
destitution, hunger and all manners of appalling conditions were raging
on Liberian refugees residing in Buduburam, a Liberian cleric, Rev. Amos
G. Bah saw the need to re-awaken their hopes through education.
He realized the urgent need to educate Liberian refugee children, most
of whom did not have any support to go to school and empower themselves
to take part in the rebuilding of post war Liberia.
To this end, Rev. Bah established the Dominion Christian Academy (DOMICA)
on March 10, 2001 with Elder Lieyee Joe as Principal.
DOMICA started as a primary school with two hundred students between the
ages of three and thirteen. The institution grew in the following year
to a full time Junior High Level with an enrolment of three hundred and
fifty students.
DOMICA is now enjoying a full time senior high school status resulting
from the recognition and approval of the school by the Ghana Education
Service (GES). DOMICA has over seven hundred and seventy five students
who are on tuition-free benefit, thirty-nine teachers, seven administrators
and two support staff.
Besides the academic aspect – which is priority one in the school
– DOMICA enjoys student journalism, drama, debates, sports, modeling
and music and dance.
Rev. Bah, an influential and a well-respected man, is the founder, proprietor
and general overseer of DOMICA, a school that has grown so tremendously
in just four years. The institution is now offering computer literacy
and other vocational courses including tailoring, hair dressing, tie-dye
and batik among others.
DOMICA’s first pride was the graduation of 110 ninth graders in
the academic year 2002/2003. This exercise, which was the first of its
kind, left memories that are still living on with the school.
130 ninth graders were graduated in December 2003/2004 academic year.
However, this was the last graduation for seniors at the J.S.S. level,
as the school was elevated to a full senior secondary level.
The school’s administration has since restricted the graduation
exercise to only the 12th graders. (View
